You have raised $1 million so far in 2013, and we couldn’t be happier! In celebration of this milestone, long-time St. Baldrick’s supporter, shavee and adventure runner, Simon Southgate, shares why he literally pushed his body to the limit to raise money for childhood cancer research:
“I have found fundraising for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and the Hong Kong Children’s Cancer Foundation to be strong motivation whilst I have been training for, and competing in my 4 Desert Ultra-marathons. Hearing first-hand the details of the challenges faced, and accounts of pain suffered by young cancer patients as part of their everyday struggle to conquer the disease provided me with a much needed reality check. The pain and discomfort of blistered feet and aching shoulders is nothing compared to the debilitating effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. If at any point during my training or races I started to feel sorry for myself, all I needed was to visualize the struggle young cancer patients face every day. I have been blown away by the sense of humor and maturity these kids display when they face their life threatening battle.”

On Nov. 22, 2012, Simon, Hong Kong Chief Inspector of Police, set out for his fourth and final race in the 4 Deserts series, the most prestigious outdoor footrace series in the world. Taking place on the Antarctic Peninsula, Simon trekked across 250 kilometers (~155 miles) fully self-supported in six stages over seven days, while facing weather conditions like gale-force blizzards, terrain covered in snow and temperatures as low as 4°F (−20°C).
