Researcher Photo

Funded: 07-01-2015 through 02-28-2018
Funding Type: Supportive Care Research Grant
Institution Location: New York, NY
Institution: Columbia University Medical Center affiliated with Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, New York-Presbyterian

Survivors of pediatric brain tumors commonly struggle with progressive declines in attention and memory that emerge following neurosurgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Unfortunately, little is known about the neurobiological substrates of these cognitive dysfunctions. Dr. Posner's Grace for Good St. Baldrick's Supportive Care Grant aims to identify the specific changes in functional and structural brain connectivity that correlate with neurocognitive decline by collecting advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neuropsychological test data on survivors. This data is being compared with healthy controls across three academic medical centers: Columbia University Medical Center, Children's Medical Center-Dallas and Seattle Children's Hospital.

This grant is named for the Grace for Good Fund created in honor of Grace Carey, a medulloblastoma survivor. It supports research of brain tumors and survivorship issues in the hopes of changing kids' lives for good.

Edward Prochownik M.D., PhD

Funded: 07-01-2015 through 06-30-2016
Funding Type: Research Grant
Institution Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Institution: University of Pittsburgh affiliated with Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh

Hepatoblastoma is the most common childhood liver cancer. Dr. Prochwnik is using models to investigate two mutant genes, SIRT3 and SIRT4, which normally work to balance metabolism and energy stores, that are commonly found in hepatoblastoma. This work aims to identify novel targets for cancer therapies in hepatoblastoma and other cancers.

The Johnny Crisstopher Children's Charitable Foundation St. Baldrick's Pediatric Blood & Marrow Transplant Consortium

Funded: 07-01-2015 through 06-30-2023
Funding Type: Consortium Research Grant
Institution Location: Minneapolis, MN
Institution: National Marrow Donor Program

Relapse continues to be the most common cause of failure after transplantation for childhood leukemia. Building upon studies completed in a previous funding period, the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium will perform three trials over the next five years that will identify children with leukemia undergoing transplantation who are at especially high risk, and add a novel immunomodulatory or cellular therapeutic intervention to prevent relapse.

This grant is named for the Johnny Crisstopher Children's Charitable Foundation whose mission is to raise awareness of pediatric cancer and provide funds for research, treatment, and - ultimately - a cure. Famed illusionist Criss Angel founded the foundation in 2008 for charitable causes but it has now become his life's mission since his son, Johnny Crisstopher was diagnosed with leukemia in 2015 when he was 20 months old.
