I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I am a 38 year old Momma from CT, transplanted to Florida in '95. My daughter Rena was dx with Stage IV Wilms' on 06.08.10 and completed her treatment for Stage IV Wilm's Tumor with metastases to both lungs on February 2, 2011 at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. As of September 7, 2011, six months off treatment, she has been declared N.E.D.-No Evidence of Disease....but as all cancer parents know....NED is incredible, but the fight doesn't end, the worry doesn't end, the scans and various other tests don't end. Our children will be subjected to all these tests to determine if a recurrence with arise sometime later in life....not something any parent or child wishes to go through. THIS is why I've joined the 46Mommas - to raise awareness, to raise money, to increase research into pediatric treatments for our kids to bring us closer to a CURE!!!

I have my Bachelor's Degree in Business Management and am 1/2 way through my MBA program. I have been working in Accounting, Finance and Management for 15 years. It was quite a change to move from working full time to taking care of my child full time, and certainly more challenging, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Now that Rena is off treatment and back in Pre-K part time, I've been able to return to work part time and while it's a challenge, it's a great challenge to have!

I have actually already shaved my head (in July 2010) but when I found out about the 46 Mommas, I really wanted to become a member -- for what the group stands for, supports, and the promotion of childhood cancer awareness of which there can never be enough. I originally cut off 15" of hair and donated two 15" braids to Wigs 4 Kids, part of the Childhood Leukemia Foundation.

I am proud to be bald to honor my daughter, and am starting to grow my hair back out so that I can be a shavee come September!!! I feel it's important for our kids to know that they are beautiful no matter if they have no hair, no eyelashes or eyebrows, a feeding tube taped to their face or anything else our children need in order to fight this disease and beat it!!!!
