Frequently Asked Questions

What does the St. Baldrick's Foundation do?

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer and donor powered charity committed to supporting the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.

Is there a real St. Baldrick?

To our knowledge, there's no real St. Baldrick. The name "St. Baldrick's" is a combination of the words "bald" and "St. Patrick's," since the first event was held in 2000 on March 17, which is St. Patrick's Day.

How can I be involved without shaving my head?

There are many ways you can help make a difference for kids with cancer!

  • Fundraise: You can raise money in any participant role at a head-shaving event – including volunteers, barbers and committee members. If head-shaving isn’t for you, you can start your own fundraiser through our Do What You Want (DWYW) program and come up with your own ideas to support St. Baldrick’s. We love a good cook off, an iced tea stand, or raising money while you train for a race – the possibilities are endless!
  • Donate: There are many ways to give to St. Baldrick’s – including monthly gifts, employer matching gift programs, memorials and corporate partnerships. Donate today.
  • Volunteer: Sign up to help at an event near you. Each event has a volunteer committee to help promote and manage it. Visit your local event's web page and contact the Volunteer Event Organizer to learn more!
  • Be a Barber: If you’re a licensed cosmetologist, we could sure use your help! If you're interested in volunteering as a barber or organizing a team from your salon to help, please contact your local Volunteer Event Organizer.
  • Organize an event: St. Baldrick’s provides all Volunteer Event Organizers with a personal coach and all of the materials necessary to plan a head-shaving event. To find out more about organizing or hosting an event call 888.899.BALD (2253) and ask to speak with a coach, or contact us.
  • Share your childhood cancer story on the web: Many St. Baldrick's participants raise money in honor or memory of a special child. If you'd like to register your child as an Honored Kid, he or she will inspire thousands of shavees and volunteers, and tens of thousands of donors. Visit the Honored Kids page to get started.
  • Share your childhood cancer story at an event: St. Baldrick's events are extra meaningful when a local family touched by childhood cancer attends and shares their story to raise funds for critical research. Doctors, nurses, and others who spend their professional lives in research or treatment for childhood cancer are also needed to speak at events as St. Baldrick's representatives. To volunteer, please contact your local Volunteer Event Organizer or contact us.
  • Advocacy: Join Speak Up for Kids’ Cancer to help make childhood cancer research a national priority.
What is a Do What You Want fundraiser?

Do What You Want – or DWYW for short – is a new DIY fundraising program that enables volunteers to support St. Baldrick’s Foundation in ways other than head shaving! Four unique categories encourage our volunteers to get creative and think outside the barber cape: Athletic/Game, Party/Celebration, Sales/Give-Back and Other. Not sure where your idea fits? Drop us a line at DWYWHelp@StBaldricks.org and we can help find the perfect DWYW idea for you!

How can I organize an event in my area?

What a great question! To speak with a St. Baldrick's representative about starting an event, please call 888-899-BALD (2253) or simply submit an event inquiry form. The basic ingredients for a successful event are:

  1. A commitment to raising funds for childhood cancer research,
  2. A great network of people to help out,
  3. The ability to find a great location, date, barbers and all the rest of the practical requirements of an event,
  4. At least a few people with hair who are willing to lose it for a good cause! Oh, and a sense of humor really helps!
