I Don’t Want To Give Up…. These are the words my daughter choked out to her oncologist from her hospital bed last night. “I Don’t Want To Give Up!”. I never knew it was possible to convey so much in 6 words, yet when Ariel spoke them, tears sliding down her cheeks, you could feel the pain, the fear, the determination, the injustice, and the innocence of a child all swirling in that one simple sentence. “I Don’t Want To Give Up!” In that same moment, as her mother, I found myself at a loss for words, my heart choked in my throat, my eyes blinded by tears, my veins filled with ice and my mind rebelled at the thought of losing my daughter to this horrible disease - childhood cancer. It was a blessing that our oncologist, with tears in her eyes, replied back, immediately and firmly, “Ariel, I would never give up on you. We are not giving up, we are making plans, we are talking to doctors and researchers here and across the country to find the best drugs, the best treatments to fight your cancer again. I promise, Ariel we will never give up.” She said so quickly what every cell in my body was screaming. “We Will Never Give Up.’ On Monday of this week, to our horror, we learned that our 13 yr old daughters cancer, (rhabdomyosarcoma) has once again returned. Originally a 3 cm tumor in her sinuses, and now after a year of intensive relapse therapy, her spine is covered in disease. Within 24 hrs of learning the news about her cancer's progression, Ariel suddenly lost the use of her right leg because of the tumor pressing on her spine. Ariel began emergency radiation and chemo that very same day, thanks to the amazingly quick response of her doctors. As I write this letter to you today, she is slowly and miraculously, regaining the ability to walk again. This is just the beginning of what will be the most important fight for our daughter’s life. Ariel has battled cancer twice in these past 4 yrs and during those years we made a commitment to her, to ourselves, to you our supporters, and our community, to raise as much money as possible for pediatric cancer research. As you know for the past 2 yrs, I’ve had the honor to help co-chair the St Baldrick’s Event here at Children’s Hospital and Research Center, Oakland. I am so proud to tell you that over the past 4 yrs, as a community, we have raised over half a million dollars for research and once again, we are on track to raise much, much more. As many of you know, I delight in sending out event related emails, cheering you on, thanking you for your commitment and reminding you of all the opportunities and ways you and others can participate in our event. I love being your cheerleader, your jokester, your biggest fan and I hope in the days to come I can continue to fulfill that role, but today our family is standing on the edge of childhood cancer’s most heartbreaking reality; 1 out of every 5 children diagnosed with cancer will not survive. Every fiber in my being cries out begging for our child to be one of the 4 children who will live to beat this disease, even if it means with a lifetime of medical complications. Our chances of this becoming a reality, now lies in very heart of the cutting edge research that St Baldrick’s funds. When you chose to support St. Baldrick’s, whether as a shavee, a volunteer, a donor, you chose to help fund the very research of which I speak. You are helping to honor a simple promise made to our daughter. A promise thousands of doctors, nurses, researchers and parents have made to every child battling childhood cancer. A promise too often made in tears and heartbreak to the angels this disease has created. A promise that can convey so much with only 5 simple words. “We Will NEVER Give Up.” And it’s from the bottom of my heart that I thank you again for helping us keep this promise. I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday March 17th. With Gratitude and Hope, Crystal Gariano St Baldrick’s VEO Mother to Ariel Rose, age 13, our little girl with the lion sized heart Now battling her 2nd cancer relapse.
