Did you know one of the founders of St. Baldrick's Foundation, John Bender ’87CBA, is a St. John's University alumnus? He was recently named the 2023 Spirit of Service honoree at the President's Dinner. He has distinguished himself as the “Iron Man” of St. Baldrick’s—being the only person in St. Baldrick’s history to have been shorn every year.

In celebration of the 25th year of St. Baldrick's, St. John's is bringing back the St. Baldrick’s Fundraiser: Head-shaving to benefit kids with cancer in full force! Students, employees, alumni, and friends help make this year's comeback event bigger than ever before. Whether you are shaving your head or supporting the cause, know you are helping children fight cancer.

You’ll be giving hope to thousands of kids diagnosed with cancer every day – from babies and toddlers to children, teens and young adults. In fact, you’ll be saving lives! Our event will speed the search for cures through St. Baldrick’s, the largest charity funder of childhood cancer research grants.

Sign up to shave your head or to raise money another way. Can’t join us in person? Please help spread the word and make a generous donation to give kids the long, healthy lives they deserve. You can accelerate the next 25 years of cures for kids with cancer!

FAQs

Where does the money go?
Since 2005, St. Baldrick's has awarded more than $342 million to support lifesaving research, making the St. Baldrick's Foundation the largest charitable funder of childhood cancer research grants.

How can I help?
Sign up as a shavee, fundraiser, and/or volunteer!
Spread the word about the event.

I shave my head on a normal basis, would that count?
Yes, that still counts! Sign on up!

I don't want to shave my head, can I still be involved?
Definitely! Attend the event to support the shavees, hold a mini fundraiser (bake sale, etc.) to help the overall event or volunteer on the day of.

Can I just donate my hair without shaving it?
If you want to align cutting your hair to a week or two before the event, we can mail it out with our shavee's hair donations with Locks of Love. Hair must be in a ponytail or braid (or multiple ponytails or braids) before it is cut (above the elastic band). Place the clean, dry hair in a plastic baggie. Note: Hair must be a minimum of 5 inches long. Bleached hair is not useable, but any color (including grey) is useable for the organization. Print this form with your donation.

Can people under 18 years old shave their heads?
We ask individuals to be at least 3 years of age before participating in a head shave and must be supervised by a parent or guardian during the shave. Additionally, all participants under the age of 18 are required to turn in a Participant Agreement form signed by their parent or legal guardian prior to shaving.

How can I get a St. Baldrick's t-shirt?
Shavees or fundraisers who raise at least $50 will receive a St. Baldrick’s t-shirt and an annual lapel pin.

St. Baldrick’s Honored Kids

Kids with cancer are our reason for it all. They’re the inspiration behind our event and the reason we’re helping fund childhood cancer research. We believe all kids should be able to grow up and turn their dreams into realities. Join our event or make a donation, and click the photos below to read their incredible stories.
