Head-Shaving

Friends Don’t Let Friends Shave Alone: Go Bald With a Buddy!

by St. Baldrick's Foundation
February 25, 2015

We asked our shavees℠ to dish about what it’s like to shave with a friend by their side. Judging by the stories shared by these seven shavees, it’s pretty much the best thing ever. So spread the word — two bald heads (or three, or four, or more) are better than one!

Adrian + Jake

Stephanie Merfeld's son Adrian shaved in 2014 and passed away the same year from cancer.

Adrian’s mom, Stephanie, says: Here is my son, Adrian, getting shaved by his best friend Jake. They shaved in honor of Adrian…He was a Wilms tumor warrior for three years. He passed away July 12, 2014. I shaved as well and will be shaving again this year. I love this picture because it shows the joy and hope in Adrian’s face.

Amber + her daughter

Amber Foye shaved with her daughter.

Amber says: My amazing 13-year-old daughter and I shaved our heads last year. It was the best experience ever.

Crosby + Ashley

Crosby Franklin and her friend Ashley shaved together.

Crosby says: Last year, a beautiful friend and I participated in St. Baldrick’s for the first time. I am so grateful that I had Ashley by my side that day!

We were coworkers at the time, and I signed up as a participant a few weeks prior to a local St. Baldrick’s event. Ashley is one of the best, most compassionate women I’ve ever met, and a few days before the event she decided to sign up as a shavee as well. We had a wonderfully supportive group of family, friends, and coworkers with us that day. In total we raised over $12,000! I can’t wait until I Brave the Shave again in a few weeks!

Ruth + her sister

Ruth Daniels clasped hands with her sister the day they braved the shave together.

Ruth says: For me, there’s no better support system than my sister. She gave me the strength to be able to do such an awesome thing.

Chris + Brianna

Chris Ruhnke shaved with his daughter, who raised more than $1,700 for childhood cancer research.

Chris says: This was two years ago with my daughter, Brianna Marie. She was so brave to join me as a freshman in high school. The pictures from that day still bring tears to my eyes. So proud of her and who she is. She raised over $1,700 that year and inspired many.

Jennifer + her husband

Jennifer Schramm Philippe and her husband have shaved three times for St. Baldrick's.

Jennifer says: My best friend also happens to be my husband. This was shave number three for us. We shave every three or so years in honor of my husband’s mother and my sister, who were both lost to cancer.

The Three Divas

Three girls rock their bald heads after they braved the shave for childhood cancer research.

Tammy, one girl’s mom, says: Shaving for the second year in a row, these lil’ divas couldn’t be more proud and are rocking their bald heads for a cure.

They braved the shave together because there is strength in numbers. Initially the girls only associated the word “cancer” with adults, such as a grandparent, aunt or uncle. When they learned about St. Baldrick’s, they discovered that cancer affects kids, too. This really drove their need to help. As a result, they joined an all-boys shave team and decided to raise awareness about childhood cancer. Their shaved heads empowered them and inspired others to get involved. The girls proved that shaving bald is not only helping to save countless lives, it’s brave! And, no doubt, beautiful — inside and out.

Be brave together — register to shave with your buddy!
