After taking a few years off, I've decided once again to participate as a "shavee" for St. Baldrick's. This year I'm going to be joined by my sons, who have graciously "volunteered" to have their heads shaved, too. Frankly, it is my boys and my lovely daughter that are prompting me this year; other than the typical bumps and bruises that occur in a child's live, my children are healthy, something that is sometimes too easy to take for granted.
For those of you that are unaware, St. Baldrick's is a non-profit organization designed to fill in the funding gap of battling childhood cancer. Less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute's budget is allocated to childhood cancer research. More children are lost to cancer in the United States than any other disease; in fact, more than many other childhood diseases combined.
As you are reading this brief narrative, a child will be diagnosed with cancer, and another family will be faced with the very real possibility of having one of their children literally fighting for their life.
I realize that we have just passed through the holiday season, and that times are not easy. There is NO obligation to donate; but, for those of you that are able, please give what you can. Whether it be $5, $500, or even your time, it is truly appreciated.
The event that my boys and I are participating in will be held on Saturday, April 22nd, at Crosstown Pub in Naperville. Come join us. . .
