I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I cannot count how many loved ones I have lost to cancer, so I cannot count the reasons why I have decided to become a "shavee" for St. Baldrick's. 2013 marks my first year as a participant, hopefully the first of many! My son was born with multiple heart defects, and, at age 3 he has already had 3 open heart surgeries. He endured a tremendous struggle, but now his fight is largely over as his heart is repaired and any replacements he may need for his artificial valve will be done in an outpatient procedure. When we were going through this it seemed like the end of the world, and then it just became our world. It's amazing what you can get used to when you have to, especially for your kids. But, what does that have to do with anything? Well, his struggles were his own, but children who have to battle with cancer have a struggle that is entirely different. Their normal is shattered, their lives forever changed. And while it may not seem like much, if I can do this one thing and help, even a little bit, then I have no choice. I must. Some people have asked me "Can't you raise money for this cause without shaving your head?" Yes. Yes I could. But that's just not how I operate. It may seem a bit overzealous, but children do not have an option of losing their hair, their strength, their "normal." My uncle didn't have that choice, my aunts, my grandmother, my childhood friend did not have that choice, and neither did the little girl we met during our Make a Wish Foundation trip to Orlando. So I am making that choice. Please consider donating any amount possible to help me reach my goal.
