2014 is my 6th year! Over the previous five I have been amazed at friends and family who help me out exceeding my goals and share their stories. My story is almost nothing compared to theirs. The way I look at it, I work in schools and have different interaction with students than teachers or principals do. My goal is to show that there are alternate ways of volunteering, donating, or being involved. It seems like most high school students assume that "participating" in something, or donating, is synonymous with making a cash contribution (cash being something most teenagers do not have). Hopefully this shows them that is not the case and there are ways to do something that are not monetary based.
That was my idea when I first began this in 2009. Since then I have had a great time meeting people who are affiliated with St Baldricks in someway. When I travel I will often wear a t-shirt with some sort of graphic on it to see if it starts a conversation. Usually a St Baldricks shirt (or Green Bay Curling). Doing that I have meet people all over the country who have a tie to St Baldricks. In Seattle I met families who have children recovering from cancer; Milwaukee young girl shavee (which I think is the most impressive!), and overseas I got the knowing head nod from foreigners where an accent, language barrier, or hurried schedule prevented us from talking. This organization really has done a great job of becoming a widely known and active international charity.
With that being said, I am looking forward to the next event on March 16th at St Brendan's in Green Bay! I would love help reaching, maybe even exceeding, my goal for 2014. I would love it even more to see some familiar faces up there for the day!
Thank you very very much for any help you can provide to me and the youngsters this overall benefits!
