My whole life I have dedicated myself to kids, whether I was a mom, caregiver or a teacher. I have been fortunate enough to not have anyone in my immediate circle affected by this horrible disease. That is until last year. My first year of teaching and one of the kindergarten students at our school was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Cancer. As an adult watching this child go through treatment and eventually succumb to his disease has been difficult, but more so, watching the other students in our building mourn, has been heartbreaking. First grade is too young... wait any grade is too young! So the students and I at Cooke are making lemonade out of lemons. We are going to make a difference! How you ask? We are making this a school wide challenge! Which ever class brings in the most donations will get to shave my head....on Facebook Live in our gym! While explaining my idea to the students, I explained that kids' cancers are different from adult cancer, and childhood cancer research is extremely underfunded. That even though we are just a few people in the world, and that they are kids, we can make big and wonderful change. Now I need your help! Will you also make a donation? Every dollar makes a difference for the thousands of infants, children, teens, and young adults fighting childhood cancers. Please Help me honor the memory of my 1st grade friend Aaliyah and show the students that we can make a difference in the world.
