Dear Friends & Neighbors,
In 2006 my neighbor's daughter, Paige Stibgen, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). After a long and valiant fight, Paige earned her angelic wings on November 7, 2007. She was just 11 years old. Witnessing her journey has changed me forever. I no longer want to sit idle when I know I can be proactive and contribute to eradicating childhood cancer. You see, I too have a young daughter, and I never want to learn what it takes first-hand to positively parent through a pediatric diagnosis, treatment options, and financial hurdles ~ all the while trying to keep the household running seemingly normal for every other family member. In Paige's honor, I humbly and earnestly ask that you take a stance and join me in celebration of her fight.
This year, I am co-organizing a fundraising event with Keith Boudart, Wes Bellamy, Jerry Slowik and the
St. Baldrick's Foundation in memory of Paige Stibgen. Many of you knew Paige or have a friend, family member or loved one that is or has been in a similar position.
The mission of the St. Baldrick's Foundation is to bring awareness and funds to cure kids cancer by supporting cancer research and fellowships. Since its inception in 2000, St. Baldrick's has raised more than $34 million for the cause! Worldwide, 160,000 kids are diagnosed with cancer each year and despite tremendous progress, cancer remains the #1 disease killer of children in the U.S. and Canada.
St. Baldrick's research grants help fill crucial funding gaps at medical institutions where children are treated for cancer, ensuring the finest care for every child. The St. Baldrick's Foundation has funded 13 research fellows, launching brilliant new careers in childhood cancer research. Grant funds have been distributed to over 230 institutions for laboratory research and to help make clinical trials available to more children than ever.
While battling cancer, children lose not only their hair but years of their childhood, and sometimes their lives. In comparison to their struggle, shaving your head is a small sacrifice, and the funds raised will make a difference for children with cancer now and in the future.
I am asking you to help me raise as much money as possible for the St.Baldrick's Foundation in memory of Paige Stibgen to fund as much research as possible! No amount is too big or too small a every gift will be appreciated. Please help me reach my goal of $10,000 by March 8th. Every year, thousands of brave men, women, and children give up their locks to raise money for childhood cancer research. I hope that you can join us as a shavee or you will consider donating on behalf of Paige Stibgen. The event will start at 1:00pm on March 8th at The South Elgin Clubhouse (next to The Manor restaurant). Special thanks and mention to proprietors, Nick and John, for hosting this initiative.
