This past year was a tough one - my mother, Frances, lost her battle with breast cancer in Dec. 2010, and my father, Lloyd, died unexpectedly in Oct. 2011 as a result of advanced pancreatic cancer. He hadn't even received an official diagnosis - one week he was here, and the next gone.
In 2010 I shaved my head, and donated my long hair to "Locks of Love". I did this to raise money for St. Baldrick's, and to support my mother who had lost her hair to chemotherapy.
This year, I'm doing it again. I am more determined than ever to help those researching for a cure for cancer. To that end, I, my fellow teacher Brittany Adams, and many of our students, have pledged to raise as much money as we can for St. Baldrick's and PALS Bermuda.
We've already lined up a 'shaver', and a date to do the deed. My longtime hairdresser, the fabulous Freddy (and proud mother of two Saltus students), will be shaving us bald on March 19, 2012 - in front of the entire Upper Primary department! - over 300 kids!!
I want to raise a 'significant' amount of money and I trust you to give as you feel you can.
Please stand in solidarity with me for kids fighting cancer, who typically lose their hair during treatment. More importantly, do it to raise funds for childhood cancer research! St. Baldrick’s supports finding a cure for cancers which affect children. Money raised goes towards research, doctor education, fellowships, and many other areas.
If I have learned anything from this past year it is to make the most of the time I have; to live each day fully and spend it with people I love. My prayer is that a cure for any cancer will lead to cures for all cancer.
