My Story

Becca was in her freshman year at college when she started to experience strange symptoms, constant infections and illnesses. Several Doctors and countless appointments gave no answers as to what was causing all of her issues. We were told it was part of college life and being sick so much was due to living with a large group of kids. Later in her sophomore year Becca developed pain her throat with swollen lymph nodes. A sonogram was ordered, and a nodule was found. Soon after, a biopsy was performed. Becca was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer. It is believed the nodule had been growing in her thyroid for several years as it is a slow growing cancer. A full thyroidectomy was performed as well as the removal of several affected lymph nodes. Radiation followed a few weeks later. Follow-up scans and blood results showed Becca was cancer free.  She will be required to take thyroid medication daily and continue to be closely monitored for the remainder of her life. Becca is currently a junior at Sacred Heart University with a major in social work. She is currently working at the social work department at SHU part-time, taking classes, and has an internship working with the elderly community in Bridgeport, Connecticut. We thank you for supporting this wonderful organization. It is because of organizations like St. Baldrick's that Becca and other kids like her will continue to thrive.
