Like most people, the fact that in the US more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease was something I didn't really think too much about or even realize. My good friend Erin, a Clinical Assistant who works in oncology at the Dell Children's Medical Center, had occasionally told stories of the children she cared for on her unit and at times I had given her a supportive shoulder to cry on when some of those children lost their battles with cancer.
Watching her, the joy of interacting with some amazing kids on a daily basis and the heartbreak of loss, I felt helpless in the fight against such a terrifying disease and admiration for the courage of the kids who struggle on a daily basis as well as for the nurses, doctors, social workers and caretakers who involve themselves in such emotionally demanding work.
Then last March, I saw that Erin had shaved off all of her beautiful blonde hair. Shocked, I asked what had inspired such a radical change and she introduced me to St. Baldrick's and it's truly important mission. The powerful symbolism inherent in shaving one's head in solidarity impressed me with its magnificent simplicity. It was at this time that I made a promise to myself that I would become involved in whatever way I could, and this year it is as a shavee!
I've joined forces with Erin's sister Hannah and together we as a team hope to raise $2,600 (my personal target is $1,000). An ambitious goal to be sure, but certainly not beyond reach with your help. Whether its $1 or $100 you can take a step right now to make an impact in a way every bit as important as the doctors, nurses and researchers caring for children with cancer and searching for a cure. Anything helps and is greatly appreciated.
