I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I participate in this event every year because I know it's a worthy cause. And while I'm lucky that pediatric cancer hasn't directly affected my family, I'm always reminded of an experience I had with it.

Joey was a childhood friend who was the most animated kid in class. I can still see Joey leaping from desk to desk.

But then Joey got sick. His was the bus stop right before mine, at the top of the hill. I vividly remember, just before stepping on to the bus, seeing Joey sitting in that first seat each day. And how I could see each day, what it did to Joey: he became less animated; his face got fuller; and then the blank stare out the window.

Joey passed away from brain cancer at nine years old. It broke my heart at nine, it breaks my heart at 45...perhaps more so being a father.

So, I pray that what I can help raise each year to fund pediatric cancer research can help the Joeys stay Joeys.

Thanks.
