A few months ago I had the opportunity to visit with a doctor at Children’s Hospital right here in Denver that has received over $450,000 from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Dr. Green and his team are focusing on a new field of cancer treatment to address diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). DIPG is a subtype of high-grade gliomas, which are aggressive brain cancers and the most common cause of death in childhood cancer. DIPG is the last incurable childhood cancer with 0% long-term survivors. I am so thankful that I had the chance to see the tangible realities of this cause that has been a part of my life for 8 years now. Walking the halls of the hospital, checking out the research labs, and hearing about the triumphs and challenges of childhood cancer research really drove home the great need that still exists.
Only 4% of National Cancer Institute funding goes to childhood cancer research and only a small percentage of that goes to brain tumor research specifically. We have a long way to go in the fight against cancer. But thanks to your support, St. Baldrick’s is the world’s largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants, having funded more than $230 million in research grants worldwide since 2005. And when you wonder where exactly your donations are going, you can rest assured that you are making a difference close to home. Children’s Hospital is of the best pediatric brain tumor research centers in the world. You are enabling Dr. Green’s research team to come up with new ideas, test these new ideas and move them into clinical trials. You are supporting the cancer fight right here at home!
Will you make a donation? Every dollar makes a difference!
