I'm shaving my head to raise money for childhood cancer research! Did you know that kids' cancers are different from adult cancers? It's true. And childhood cancer research is extremely underfunded. So I decided to do something about it by raising money for cures.
2018 will be my 3rd year participating as a shavee for the Farthest North F.O.O.L.S St. Baldricks event. My journey with St. Baldricks and NPFD began in March of 2016. While sitting in my car with the radio on I heard a commercial advertising our local Fire Departments sponsoring a St. Baldricks event and recruiting shavees. With Hair down past my waist I decided that I just had to participate. After calling my husband on the phone and telling him the "exciting" news, I called my sister Karissa and got her on board as well. Karissa also having hair down to her waist decided that she would stand with me and shave her head for childrens cancer research as well. We chose a local non profit organization from our home town, Children with Hair loss to donate our pony tails to and on the day of the event, I had donated 31 inches of hair and Karissa Donated 25 inches.
Cancer rocked our entire family for the first time in 2009 when our Grandmother was diagnosed with Stage 4 Stomach cancer. While our Grandmother was fighting and going thru Chemo treatments, Children with Hair loss donated a wig of her choice to her. Since then, Karissa and I have made several donations of hair to their organization in pure gratitude that they helped with our Grandmothers fight with Cancer.
March of 2017 was my second year registering as a shavee and my first year participating as the team captain for the North Pole Fire Department. Even though I did not have enough hair to donate I was still able to fund raise enough money in donations to beat my goal of 250.00. Karissa did not participate as a shavee for 2017 but she did work as a volunteer and was with us every step of the way.
As a Third year participant of this event I have taken on the role of the North Pole Fire Departments Team Captain and Shavee Recruiter for St. Baldricks 2018. My personal fundraising goal is set to 500.00 but I would love to surpass that amount! My teams total Fundraising goal is 1500.00 and our events fundraising goal is 20,000.00. Now I need your help! Will you make a donation? Every dollar makes a difference for the thousands of infants, children, teens, and young adults fighting childhood cancers.
