Last year when I decided to shave for St. Baldrick's, I shared the story of a schoolmate who had fought Leukemia. I reflected on my memories of him when we were students in the mid-1970s at Transfiguration Catholic School in Wauconda. Not long after my shave, a new restaurant opened in town, and I came in with my BALD head, not knowing anything about the new owner. Everyone in the bar was asking me about my bald head and I told my story. About my memory of the boy, Brad, and how it had affected me see his suffering when we were 10 or 11 years old. . . . Then I learned this business owner had just returned to Wauconda after many years - and it dawned on me who it was! It was the COUSIN, and best friend, of the boy lost to cancer all those years ago - and another classmate from those bygone days. Tears were shared by all. This year may seem easier to me to take off my hair - but it never gets easier for families to face and fight cancer, or deal with the losses. Please give, so that in the future, these stories are a thing of the past. . .
