Like many across the world, the first-year Design and Production students at Boston University have been impacted, either directly or indirectly, by cancer. Our shared experiences have driven us to participate in hack/reduce & Boston Big Data's Go BIG and Go BALD for Child Cancer Research event. Through the fundraiser, supporting St. Baldrick's Foundation, we will raise money for childhood cancer research. This research will not only help to extend the lives of childhood cancer patients and to search for cures, but also to improve the effectiveness and minimize the negative side effects of treatments. At the end of our fundraiser, one member of our group will shave their head as an act of solidarity with the patients.
Personally, cancer has always been a part of my life in some way or another. Both of my parents were research scientists and contractors for cancer research. I grew up constantly hearing about new treatments, new genetic discoveries, new hopes, and new set backs. In June 2013, my father was diagnosed with Melanoma and lung cancer. After two years of intense treatments, he passed away following complications from pneumonia. His death has changed not only the way I view my life, but the lives of my family members and friends. He taught me that cancer research funding is vital, not only because of his illness, but also through the illnesses he taught me so much about as a child. I shave my head for him.
BUddies' baseline fundraising goal is $2,500, to be reached by November 2, 2015. I personally would like to raise at least $500 by this time. I ask you to consider donating any amount to this cause, and deeply thank you for your contribution.
