Mia Juliet was born on January 2, 2009 as a beautiful, healthy little bundle of joy. On October 17, 2009 at the age of nine months, she was diagnosed with ATRT (Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor) of the brain (a rare and high-grade brain tumor) and hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain). In a matter of two months, Mia underwent many different surgeries in an effort to extract the tumor and to treat the hydrocephalus and then endured several chemotherapy treatments as a follow-up for the cancer treatment. This particular cancer is very rare and extremely aggressive and had been known to frequently spread through the central nervous system - which it did in Mia's case as well - quickly spreading throughout her spine. Sadly, on February 23, 2010, Mia lost her hard-fought battle against this horrible tumor. She was a one very strong and very brave little baby and fought an incredible fight. However, because of its rarity, there is very little research or treatment options available for ATRT - especially for children who contract it under the age of 2. In the future, more research needs to be done (and, thankfully, is currently underway) to help other babies/children in the future who are afflicted with ATRT. Mia's family is so proud of how she fought her own battle and continues to be inspired by their angel each and every day. .
