I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I am shaving my head in honor of my son Joey, who on March 21, 2011 will reach his 5 year remission mark from AML—Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. I am also shaving in honor of Aubrielle and Tommy who are in remission from cancer, and in memory of Katie, Chris, Trevor, Keaton, Jaden and Steven, all children who had cancer and fought with all their might against it, and who are now among the angels. I am shaving in honor of all the parents like us, who watched and prayed and cried and suffered along with their children, while their babies took medicine that slowly killed their bodies and created a host of other complications that have and still may surface throughout their lives for as long as they survive.
We had a good appointment with Joey’s Dr. (Dr. “Z”) a couple of months ago, and while Joey’s prognosis looked good for now, the overall outlook for AML patients continues to not look so good. He told us that AML pediatric patients are still taking the same medicine they took 50 years ago—there haven’t been many improvements simply because there is no money for research. And pediatric cancer research is unique—a cure could come up today for adult AML, but it would take years of testing and research for it to find its way to the pediatric cancer market. So while wonderful progress may be made in breast cancer and colon cancer treatment, children are still being hospitalized like Joey was, with fungal infections, bacterial and viral infections that attack a body with no immune system; the drugs leave these kids so ill that they actually encounter risks of starving or bleeding to death or suffering fatal bouts of infections, all from the from the side effects of the drugs. This isn’t to mention the other non-fatal side effects like such bad mucositis (holes/burns in the lining of the intestinal system) that the pain is severe enough to have children be on round-the-clock IV painkillers to deal with the pain.
We know we are the lucky ones…we get to hold our boy—all three of our boys!—every day and kiss them and tell them that we love them. And not a day goes by that we don’t do that, because we nearly lost that chance with one of them. But we also know that there are so many parents out there that aren’t that lucky—and we are shaving and raising money so that the numbers of families that lose their precious children to the “cancer monster” are less and less because of St. Baldricks and the amazing doctors and researchers that are working because of the grants that St. Baldricks provides.
