I believe it was William Shavespear who penned the famous phrase: "For he who Shaves His Head with me shall be my Brother."
In 2001, at the age of five, one of the Land Park Motley players was diagnosed with Stage IV neuroblastoma cancer (a cancer of the nervous system). Survival of a stage III cancer is very difficult, and survival of stage IV is unfortunately rare. He underwent several months of aggressive treatments including chemotherapy, surgeries, a stem cell transplant and radiation. The doctors said that the treatment would probably take his life before the cancer did. It has now been eight years since his stem cell transplant at UCSF and there continues to be no sign of cancer anywhere in his body. He is fourteen now and an outstanding rugby player. He doesn't take life too seriously and he loves to make you laugh. He is alive today because of advancements made through research. By participating in St. Baldrick's you can become a hero and make a difference in the life of a future rugby player or another child battling cancer.
Last year, as well as the years before, his teammates shaved their heads in tribute to our teammate as a fundraising effort to raise money for the organization St. Baldricks' Society to fund childhood cancer research. Our teammate and friends, and even some of the coaches will be doing it again this year! The shaving date is March 15, 2010, at de Vere's Irish Pub, 1521 L street. Time to be announced (evening).
