I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

As some of you are aware, I will be participating as a shavee for St. Baldrick's again this year. This is a wonderful charity focused on raising funds and support in the fight against childhood cancer. (More information available at https://www.stbaldricks.org ) Going into this year, I have been proud to help raise any support for this worthwhile cause. I have the privilege to know children who have been able to overcome their diagnoses through the great efforts of caregivers and the latest research. Yet, there is still the sorrow of too may who were unable to overcome even as they fought so valiantly. Thinking about this spectrum, it left me wondering if there was more that I could do. As I reviewed by talents, abilities and resources, I realized I had an ability I had not yet tapped. An ability that could be so powerful that I could beat the previous goals and really show how much support is needed; an ability that if tapped could reach the very core of any people, be they man or woman, old or young, American or International. This one ability could unite diverse groups in the name of one goal: The ability to debase myself. I have shaved my head twice now, and while people have been appreciative of the support, I never have felt like it was a big deal. Unlike so many kids, my hair was just growing right back. I realized I needed more skin in the game - I needed to put something on the line. I needed to really feel that I was giving something more. Here's what I came up with: The Wooly Willy Project. This year, not only am I pledging to shave my head, but I am offering my chin as well. I will shave my by now full beard into the popular choice (more on this in a bit) for at least two weeks as well. Each $30 in donations will add one more day to that tally. That's right, for the price of a cup of coffee, you can keep my facial hair locked in longer. You will get to choose what my face looks like, much like the old Wooly Willy toys. Back to the popular choice: All people who pledge will be given access to vote which facial hair option will be my destiny. Will it be the soul patch? The Martin Van Buren? The Abe Lincoln? You will have your say, I will comply and post all pictures to verify my authenticity. Is that really enough, you might say? Well, wait, there's more! If you act now and help me raise more that my previous years' record ($1790), I'll throw my eyebrows into this mix. (Not for the same time as the beard, I sweat waaay too much in the spring and summer and need something to catch it from my brow.) And as a final offer, I will throw in the rest of the summer until the end of August at $3000. Donation information is here: https://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/mypage/participantid/388237 I'm being light-hearted about this part, but I am serious about doing this and raising this money. All of this money goes to an incredibly worthy cause and I'm honored to help. In realizing that the economy is still tough on so many, I understand money can be tight. I am grateful for whatever little bit can be donated and would ask only one other favor for free. Please forward this to anyone you can. Be it a forward, a Facebook post, a tweet, please get this word out. It would be a pleasure to make the company of someone I have not met by letting them choose my facial hair. Please get this word out however you can and help to reach these goals. I will forward out the access to vote upon confirmation of email within the St. Baldrick's system. As in the past, I am shaving in honor of Haidyn Reinhardt and Charlie Morlock and in memory of Cian Crowley. I am grateful for your time and attention; I look forward to shaving my head and my beard (as I have let them both grow and now look like Alan from 'The Hangover') and helping these brave children who can use every bit of support. Cheers, Dave
