Last year, my son, Caleb made me the proudest mother on the planet. He decided not only to shave his head for pediatric cancer research, he had goals he wanted to meet. He wanted to raise $1000 and he wanted kids and adults to join his team, the Keysor Cueballs. Specifically, he wanted as many people as possible on his team and he wanted 10 girls to shave their heads with the team. He raised $1200, his team raised over $3000 and he had FOUR girls do it ( a third grader, a fourth grader, a teacher, and a mom). It was perhaps one of the most moving things I had ever witnessed. A few months later when he asked me to do it with him next year and to let my hair grow as long as I could before shaving it, I could not say no. I've since found out that I can't donate my hair because it has been color treated (my vanity, I know...) I'm still going to continue to let it grow until the big day.
I've had many people offer to pay me not to shave my head but I cannot let my child down and there are so many kids out there suffering and money for research just might save their lives. I had the opportunity to visit the Target House in Memphis, TN in 2006 as part of the Juice Plus team. My husband, Thomas ran in the St. Jude's Marathon sponsored by JP+ and I stood with patients and families who live at the Target House cheering the runners on (freezing my butt off). But, knowing that I can do something to help kids live is worth losing my hair. The Keysor Cueball slogan is "It's only hair!" and this year, I'm doing it. Please help us reach our goal!
I want to give a shout out to our friend (and adopted sister/daughter) Gracie Kate in Slidell, LA. When she heard about Caleb shaving his head, she fought her Mom and Grams tooth and nail to be allowed to raise money for kids with cancer and shave off her beautiful head of golden blonde hair. She is currently the TOP fundraiser in the state of Louisiana! We love you Grace! You are awesome and will be an inspiration to the kids and adults who know you! You go, girl!!
One more thing...I don't have a personal cancer story but my friend Lynn has donated and told me about her 2 year old god daughter who died from a brain tumor. On Sunday, I will be shaving in honor of Sydney Grace...a special angel.
Ok, the head is out there...lets see the donations!
