Why do I volunteer for St. Baldrick’s? Kids.
That’s the short one-word answer.
The long answer:
Kids are our future and St. Baldrick’s concentrates on finding a cure for childhood cancer. I got introduced to it by Max Kimble because I was curious on why he does it. I fully understood the purpose of it when I heard from Max that he himself was a childhood cancer survivor. That revelation happened to me in Sep 2016 when we were on a business trip. My wheels were turning on this great cause that had become a movement and in November 2016 we had candid discussions on what I could do. Then there were my 3 kids who were probably curious to see me bald in the spring of 2017! In 2017 April when I first volunteered to become a shavee I witnessed some of the kids who were going through this difficult ordeal at ages as little as 3. One of those kids didn’t make it till the 2018 April event and that's LILLY. I can’t even imagine going through this with one of my kids and that drives me to give back!
In 2019, one of my best buds got news that her mother was Stage IV cancer and I dedicated my shave to her mom as I could not imagine her pain. In Sep of 2019, another good friend of mine got a call that her mom had been admitted for something else which turned out to be cancer and she passed within a day. I’m dedicating my 2020 shave for her. I’ve never shared this with either of them, but maybe things could’ve been different if there was some kind of early detection during their childhood? We would never know.
I know humanity in 2020 is fighting for survival against a crazy pandemic but kids have been fighting something of epic proportion in cancer for decades. We are all in this good earth for a short time and making a difference in the life of kids, to give them a fighting chance, cannot be understated. More so today and even more so NOW.
LET’S GO!!
