In the March of 2018, while I was deployed to Afghanistan, I got a call from my wife that would change my life forever. Our son, Dane, had just been diagnosed with hepatoblastoma -- liver cancer.
I was shocked and heart broken. Our baby boy who had been so full of life and love when I left was now stuck in the fight of his life. Within the first few days of his diagnosis, Dane underwent a major surgery where the doctors removed a grapefruit sized tumor and 60% of his liver. From there it was in and out of the hospital for check ups and chemo therapy until Dane was determined to be cancer free at the end of June.
Needless to say those few months were daunting -- full of fear, worry, and anxiety -- but through it all our boy was incredible. He inspired us every day, and honestly, he gave us the courage to help him fight.
Today, Dane is an absolute wild 3 year-old who loves to be outside, playing with his puppy, or playing with his toys. He continues to inspire us with his passion for life and his capacity for love. He is our angel. He is the reason I'm shaving my head and pledging to help defeat childhood cancer.
