I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research with: Candor Emergency Squad

As many of you know (or wondered why), I have shaved my head in March for the last two years. I do this to raise money for pediatric cancer research. On March 13, 2011, I will do it once again.

One Sunday in March 2009, I came to Ithaca to support a friend who was getting her head shaved. She raised about $1,000 and was doing it in honor of a four year old little girl, she was a nurse for, who had brain cancer. While at that event I was talking to a mother of a 3 year old. She was telling me how her son has Leukemia and will be in treatment until July 2011. YES, over 2 more years! That completely broke my heart. Then one of the hairstylists, who was shaving heads, said he would donate $500 if I shaved my head. I thought “it’s only hair, but these little people are fighting for their lives and I want to help”. I went home bald that night. It was one the most rewarding thing I have been a part of. Last year, I co-organized an event in my hometown, Candor. We raised over $30,000! We hope to surpass that this year, but can’t do it without your help.

I'm striving for the day that no parent gets told “your child has cancer” without hearing “but we have a cure!”
