I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I'm shaving my head for childhood cancer!

Hi all! Yes, you read that correctly! On May 6th, I will be participating in Drexel's St. Baldrick's head shaving event. If you are unfamiliar with the organization, they are known as "the crazy head shaving people" raising money for childhood cancer. In 2000 it started as a bet. Three business men challenged each other to shave their heads and raise $17,000 for childhood cancer research. At their event they raised over $100,000 and the rest is history. Since then over $200 million has been used to fund lifesaving research for children fighting the hardest battle of their life.

Many have asked me why I am doing this and the answer is simple. Every two minutes a parent somewhere in the world hears that their child has cancer. If you have ever heard me talk about my future, you may already know that I want to devote my nursing career to pediatric oncology. Even though I feel that this is the patient population I have been called to help I wish this was not a reality for so many children and their families. For these children the path to survival is a painful, brutal, and dangerous road, and sometimes cancer does have the last word. 1 in 5 children in the US and Canada diagnosed with cancer do not survive. For the children who do survive 2 out of 3 will develop long term effects from the very treatment that saved their life. With these daunting statistics less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute's budget is solely dedicated to childhood cancer research.

This is why I am calling on family and friends. I want to help St. Baldrick’s open new clinical trials, fund research, and provide training to new researchers. If a donation is not possible at this time I am asking if you could share my page. This means a lot to me and any support I can get means more than you know.

Join me as I brave the shave and let's take childhood back from cancer!
