I have participated in this charity for a few years now (on and off, no pun intended...) Their mission is to work towards finding cures and aiding in comfort for kids (infants to young adults) afflicted with all forms of cancer. With chemotherapy, a side effect happens to be the loss of hair. We are showing that we stand with our kids by voluntarily removing our hair.
We raise funds so that ultimately, one day, we can find the skeleton key that mutates the cells that turn their bodies against them. Additionally we are hoping that researchers and administrators can prolong the time that these kids have a quality life while the race for solutions continues.
I have a personal stake in this matter: I grew up with a friend whose daughter had suffered horribly from losing her ovaries... as a child. She came out the other side a fierce, fantastic human being, but getting there was gut wrenching. Additionally, a young lady, the niece of my ex-wife, found out she had cancer while she was pregnant with her son. She as well is in remission; her little boy is 3 years old.
I got lucky, but many of us know someone who wasn’t. I have two fantastic daughters, who cause amazing amounts of confusion and pain because, well they are teens. But they are strong, healthy, and have a future ahead of them. I am lucky. I want to make an impact, even a small one, for those that are not. Help me make an impact. Help me make a dent.
*** ONE LAST NOTE ***
I won't be cutting my beard or getting a hair cut until it is time to shave! I will post pictures of the mass of fur on my dome all the way to shaving day!
