Research is hope for kids with cancer, but donations to find cures have been down since 2020.
One of the reasons I got involved 10 years ago was that my younger cousin Angela died just shy of 21 of a childhood cancer. She has now been gone longer than she lived. So this is in her memory, and to keep research going for the best treatment options for kids with cancer. Treatment for kids has to be different than treatment for adults, because their bodies are still growing and need to heal enough to live beyond childhood. I also shave and fundraise in honor of Katie F., a colleague’s daughter, who had a childhood cancer and then had to have a heart transplant in her late 20’s because of the toll the treatments took on her young body. Science can do BETTER than a shortened life, a life of being on waiting lists for transplants, a life of fragile immune systems that struggle to fight off a common cold, much less a pandemic virus.
I know you know these things. But I get passionate, and you deserve to know why!
