My Story

Nathaniel was diagnosed shortly after his 4th birthday celebration. We are often asked how we discovered it. I don’t know if we would have caught it when we did, except for the fact that he just had his annual check up and had received vaccines. He had developed a low grade fever from the vaccines that lingered longer than 5 days. Since his fever wasn’t going away we took him to the doctor. His doctor checked him out and because he wasn’t showing any signs of infection, the doctor took a blood sample. After about 5 minutes his results came back and they were alarming. His Blood Counts showed some abnormalities and the doctor immediately alerted us that it could be leukemia. After that instant, our lives changed forever. I am grateful for those vaccines because without them, I might not have noticed him sick until much later. He is now in his final year of maintenance and all is progressing well. He is a happy and strong first grader that blows my mind every day with his resiliency and attitude. He is my hero.
