My Story

Gabe was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma in his T8 vertebrae on June 5, 2023. About a month before his diagnosis, he had been complaining of back pain, which we attributed to a minor sports injury-Gabe loves playing sports. The pain was getting worse so we took him to the ER where they did an X-ray and told us he had a vertebrae fracture and to have him rest and it should heal on its own. Within the next couple of weeks the pain was getting worse. He woke up one morning and his knees buckled when he tried to stand. We took him back to the ER and had an MRI done which showed a mass on his vertebrae. We were immediately told to take him to Children's Hospital in Detroit. Less than 24 hours after arriving at Children's Hospital, he lost function in both legs because of the tumor pressing on his spine. Before the biopsy was back, doctors started chemo, and within 3-4 days he was able to move his legs again. We're so thankful for how quickly and proactively the Children's Hospital doctors responded to everything. Gabe's had some bumps in the road along the way but overall has responded very well to treatment. As of this writing, he has one more treatment to go for a total of 14 rounds of chemo and 30 rounds of proton radiation. Go Gabe!!!
