I'm a renegade member of the Ride 4 David Event -- I’m walking instead of riding, taking my own path, and doing this in honor of two Davids who both had an affinity for renegades.
The Ride 4 David is in memory of David Heard, who was 10 when he died of cancer on 2/10/2011. I didn’t get to know David in person, but from his mom, my friend and colleague, Susan, I know enough about his spirit to know that I would have been crazy about this boy. He urged everyone to LIVE BIG and EMBRACE LIFE, as he did. Even now, 4 years after he left us, David inspires people he never even met.
I’m also doing this in memory of my brother David, who died of cancer at age 40. This June will be 10 years since he left us, but his spirit of living large and making the most of life will never die. To me, he was the best brother in the whole world, and to others, he was the best son, husband, father, cousin, brother-in-law, friend or neighbor. David himself was a shavee, and I know he’d be shaving still if he were with us.
Since I can’t ride the 5 boroughs of New York, I made up my own challenge: I’m walking around the Rose Bowl 40 times, beginning on the anniversary of David Heard's death (2/10).
The Ride for David is 40 miles long. My brother David is forever 40. I’m walking around the Rose Bowl 40 times. Please donate to support childhood cancer research in their memory.
