Event Details

She wanted to shave her head, but her parents needed convincing.

On April 7, student Meg Gist emailed Mr. Deegan a "Hair Petition".  Meg wanted to persuade her parents to get a buzz cut.  To do so, she said that she was crafting a persuasive note and collecting signatures to sway her parents' views.  Meg said she was missing the support she had received all year from the Charlottesville High community, before COVID-19 shuttered school.  Her petition was her way of recapturing that supportive spirit, she said.

Mr. Deegan was conflicted.  Though he supports students' rights to self-expression, he also wanted to honor the wishes of Meg's parents.  But he suggested to Meg an idea that might strengthen her argument: use her head shaving as a way to raise money for St. Baldrick's, which sponsors a hair-shaving fundraiser every year.  Meg pitched her argument, citing the St. Baldrick's idea, too.  Her parents approved, and the World History Virtual Shave was born.

Please consider taking part in the Virtual Shave on May 11.  If you're like many, you've missed your regular hair cut in the name of social-distancing safety and you are overdue for a trim (or shave).

If a hair shave isn't your forte, please consider donating to this great cause.  For more information on the shave and on what St. Baldrick's does, please watch the video below.

Be well and let's have some fun!

Sincerely,
Meg Gist and Mr. Deegan
