Celebrating 25 Years

St. Baldrick’s started as a grassroots effort 25 years ago, driven by people who believe in helping kids with cancer.

National Partner

Daniel the Brave

On February 17, 2012 my son Daniel became free of pain and free from cancer. My son Daniel made the ultimate sacrifice and he is my hero. Daniel was a fighter, but he also had a kind heart that impacted everyone who met him or followed his story.

Daniel was a vibrant 2 year old boy before diagnosis. He was full of energy and loved his trains and cars. In late May 2011, we started to notice a small limp in Daniel’s walk. We attributed it to being an adventurous two year old. Within, a week his left arm became swollen. We took him to the doctor and blood work and x rays were taken. The doctors thought he may have sprained his arm. That same weekend Daniel developed a low grade fever. The doctors sent us to the ER and he was then admitted to Children’s Hospital. More blood tests were done and we were told he might have Juvenile Arthritis or Leukemia. A bone marrow biopsy was performed and on June 8, 2011 Daniel was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).

Because of a rare chromosome issue with Daniel's ALL we were told he would need a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT). This same chromosome issue just would not respond to conventional chemotherapy treatment and he missed a BMT due to a relapse in November.

In January a new treatment plan was put together for Daniel at St. Jude, but a fungal infection set us back again.

Daniel was a rarity in that he never let his treatment bring him down. He did have his bad days, but he was always ready to play. He battled hard for 9 months.

Please make a donation on behalf of Daniel the Brave to support children's cancer research so more kids have a chance at a life.
