Last year was the first year the Bynum's participated in this event. Having agreed to shave our heads the weekend before the event, I think we raised over $5,000 in 5 days. Apparently many really wanted to see us Bynum Boys bald! My wife, Ann, and I sat down with our three boys: Matt, Luke and John and explained why we were doing this and what it was for. At the time they were 9,7 and 5, respectively. Last year, we dedicated our "follicular follies" to a good friend Jake who was in the throws of beating his cancer. This year, the boys are a year older and together we have a new inspiration for this year's event that hits home directly. Ann, their mom and my wife, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer just before the holidays last year. Just last week we went to The Mayo Clinic and went through testing and re-confirmation and surgery to remove the cancer in the thyroid and surrounding lymph nodes. While this type of cancer may not be as serious as others, it is still cancer. We Bynum Boys are going to do our part to bring change to this disease and to assist in bringing awareness to a horrible disease that often begins rearing its ugly head in children. When Ann and I look at our boys, we cannot imagine what some families have to go through, but we are here to help in the best way we know how and that is to take action! Help us by donating and catch us on www.youtube.com under "bald Bynum's". The second installment is coming soon!
