Welcome to Team Lucas!

Lucas was a beautiful, precious boy whose smile melted the hearts of everyone who met him. And he had the best belly laugh! Lucas was not just a part of Kelly and Tim’s family; he was part of our family in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. His mom was a pediatric oncology nurse that we worked along side of, caring for our precious families that God entrusted to us. We knew Lucas as he grew in Kelly’s womb and saw his ultrasound photos and anticipated his birth. What none of us would have ever fathomed was that he would be diagnosed with metastatic rhabdoid tumor at the age of 4 months. While this was devastating to all of us, I can’t even begin to imagine the devastation to his parents.

In his short life of 10 months, there were many beautiful moments woven into the hard ones. Over 40 members of our oncology team gathered in one of the nurse’s home to pray for Lucas and his parents. People throughout the country were gathering in prayer for Lucas. Through all he endured, his beautiful smile was always there. He loved dinosaurs and little dinosaurs began popping up around our clinic and making us smile. We supported each other in ways we hadn’t before and our respect and love for one another grew. When we realized he wouldn’t reach his first birthday, we again gathered together and celebrated his life, a life that was filled with so much love. Lucas lives on in our hearts and every time I see a dinosaur a smile crosses my face and I think of Lucas.
