HELLO! Thank you for visiting #bryanandbetsygobald! Bryan and Betsy are Emergency Department RN's at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital of Oakland. They are teaming up to represent the ED by shaving their heads to raise money for childhood cancer research!

BETSY

"Having worked as a pediatric oncology nurse for 7 years both at BCHO and in Boston, I have experienced the joys and the anguish of cancer in children and their families. I have always held these families close to my heart.

When Bryan asked me to join him in participating in St. Baldrick's, without hesitation, I said yes. As I have had a complicated relationship with my hair, his inquiry was very symbolic.

I was not allowed to have hair as a child, so have never cut my hair, and have used my hair as a shield. It's time to "bare the soul" while contributing to this incredible group of children. Thank you for letting me participate."

BRYAN

"I am a returning shavee (2012), but this time, I brought a friend. The unlikeliest of friends. Through my boyish charm and powers of persuasion, I have brought along the one and only Betsy Segarra, and she is the star of this show.

I do have one story though.

My barber's name is Shevy, (@shevythebarberian) and he’s a really cool dude; easy going, down to earth, and he has serious, grade A skills with the clippers and scissors. His chair at LEVELS Barber Shop is one of my favorite places in the world. My go-to haircut is a mid-high bald fade, thin out the top. To a certain extent, especially at work for some reason, I am defined by the “wanna-be Bruno Mars” shape of my head. I love my hair and I love getting haircuts – it’s my thing.

So, this year, I decided that I want to be defined by something even cooler than Bruno Mars himself: shaving my head to support childhood cancer research. As a nurse in the ED I have had the privilege of caring for many of these children and families. These kids are more resilient than I could ever fathom and if I can do my small part by shaving my head in an effort to raise money for them, then I’m game.

I am honored to participate, and to share this experience with my dear friend and “work mom”, Betsy."
