Celebrating 25 Years

As of 2015, the American Cancer Society estemates that there are approximately 1,658,370 cases of cancer in the United States. Every one of those people have families and lives, and not every one of those people are going to win their battle with cancer. Last year, I watched as two of my Sigma Kappa sisters raised $5000 and shaved their heads for St. Baldricks. Watching their hair fall away, I had never felt so proud to be a part of something or to have known such beautiful and brave women. This year, I watched as the sweetest kid I know, Dalton Levine, battled with adrenal gland cancer which is a form of cancer that only 1 in 2 million people get. He went through 6 rounds of aggressive chemotherapy, lost all of his hair, underwent two surgeries, and had a scary experience with Flight for Life. After 5 months of intense treatment, however, Dalton is CANCER FREE!!! His positivity and willingness to do anything and everything that the doctors asked of him has left me speechless with amazement, and I am so unbelievably proud of him. Hair is made of dead skin cells, just like your finger nails, but everyone puts so much significance in it. I used to get upset when my hairdresser would cut my hair too short, but I've come to realize that no matter how short it's cut, and no matter how bad the haircut might be, my hair will eventually grow back. Some people don't get that luxury. So, I plan to cut off 8 inches of my hair and donate it along with the money that I raise. My hope is that a woman who didn't have the choice when losing her hair will be able to wear my wig and feel confident and beautiful. Meanwhile, my hair will be short and sweet!
