I'm shaving my head with St. Baldrick's to raise money and help conquer kids' cancers!
Every 2 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide, and 1 in 5 of those in the U. S. will not survive. I refuse to accept this reality, so I’ve decided to fundraise for lifesaving research to find cures and better treatments for kids.
Being bald at 50 may be weird and awkward, but it is NOTHING compared to what kids with cancer go through. People ask me why I want to shave my head ... and my short answer is simple and from the heart: because kids with cancer are the bravest people I know, and shaving my head to support them and find a cure is easy compared to their courageous battles.
The longer answer is that I am shaving my head this year for three reasons:
1) my brother Carl is shaving his head for the 20th (!!!) time with the St. Baldrick's Foundation this year. His participation is so inspiring and I am proud to join him for his 20th and final shave.
2) our brother Andy was a Wilm's tumor survivor until he passed away suddenly at age 7 from complications from his tumor-removal surgery. He was one of the brightest spirits I have ever known and is dearly missed.
3) my son Owen was diagnosed with anaplastic large T-cell lymphoma in 2018, the same month he turned 20. He had over 30 tumors, lost 40+ pounds, and lost the ability to walk for 8 months. He battled quietly and courageously, showing a depth and strength well beyond his years. Owen and Andy were best friends.
I shave my head with the hope that ALL kids who battle cancer can be survivors.
Now I need your support! Your donation can fund research to help kids survive and thrive. Join me today and let's #DFYchildhoodCancers together.
