More than eight years ago, my mom, Gayle Lister, shaved her head before she would lose her hair when she underwent chemotherapy for Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). I wanted to shave my head in solidarity, but at the time I wasn't quite brave enough. I did, however, grow my hair long enough to donate to an organization that makes wigs for people in similar situations.
Unfortunately, my mom lost her battle on October 23, 2002.
Last summer, a dear friend challenged me to join her in growing out my hair to donate, once again... And then the wheels started turning...
What if I decided to shave my head? I wouldn't have to grow my hair out as long, and I could raise money to help kids who have cancer! I could kill two birds with one swipe of the razor!
The idea was born.
Last fall, I spoke to my principal about shaving my head for charity, and the next thing I knew, I was organizing a school-wide fundraiser!
On April 20, 2010, the Carr ASB approved our fundraiser. At that meeting, I found out a little bit more about St. Baldrick's. When our coach told us that the proceeds from our fundraiser would go towards research being conducted at Children's Hospital, Los Angeles, tears sprang to my eyes.
My honored hero, Laiken Kenwood, lost her battle with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia at CHLA on April 22, 2008. This fundraiser just became so much more personal for me.
Please donate whatever you can (no donation is too small!) to help me find a cure for childhood cancers. I'll send you a St. Baldrick's bracelet with a handwritten thank-you letter, and I'll be sure to post photos of me when the deed is done!
Thank you so much for supporting me in the fight against children's cancers!
Light and Love... x13.
