I am participating in the St. Baldrick's Foundation Shave for the Brave event at my high school. For the event, I will be shaving my head in support of childhood cancer research. The St. Baldrick's Foundation uses their donations to fund research that is used to develop new medicines and methods to treat cancer in kids. I participated in the same event at my school in 2015, as we hold the event every other year. In 2014, one of my former baseball teammates was diagnosed with cancer, which makes the event much more meaningful to me. He is currently doing well, but many other kids just like him benefit greatly from the development of new childhood cancer treatments.
I have not cut my hair yet in 2017 and will not till the shave on March 24th. In 2015, I personally raised $905; my goal this year is to raise $2,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation.
The event is a very moving and enjoyable experience to see over 100 participants have their heads shaved and meet the children and families affected by cancer. There are also basket raffles and refreshments available, and the proceeds go towards the event.
Did you know that kids' cancers are different from adult cancers? It's true. And childhood cancer research is extremely underfunded. So I decided to do something about it by raising money for cures. Every dollar makes a difference for the thousands of infants, children, teens, and young adults fighting childhood cancers.
