This year Brendan and I are once again Braving the Shave to raise money for St. Baldrick’s Foundation. We have done this for the past three years to honor Brendan’s Aunt Meg Dunican, who died terribly young, yet remains a meaningful part of her family’s life to this day. This year, we are proud to have permission to also honor Oliver Edson, the son of my hometown friends Jennifer (Ripa) and Luke Edson.
The core of our participation and support of St Baldrick’s has always been to appreciate our good fortune and make what effort we could to support those captured by this disease. When Luke shared Oliver’s story last fall, it broke my heart, but it also renewed my commitment to this endeavor. You see, Oliver is 16 years old. When his dad and I were 16, we were free to worry about nothing more important than beating our lacrosse opponent, and razzing our teammates in ways we hoped our parents didn’t hear. At his 16, Oliver battles recurrent metastatic osteosarcoma, and he does so more fiercely and shows more strength than lacrosse allows. And his parents do the same. This family’s strength and devotion is inspiring.
We do this for the Edsons, the Dunicans, and the millions of families we don’t know that are fighting this battle. Cancer is terrible, but it is beatable. Research finds cures, but it needs funds. St. Baldrick’s does a great job managing costs and funding grants to research cures for childhood cancer. I am proud to support it, and I am proud that my son and I will Go Bald on April 1st. Please support Oliver, remember Meg and sponsor Brendan and me if you can, and share our story if you will. Thank you and God bless.
