On April 2nd I will be shaving my head for the second year to help support St. Baldrick's Foundation for researching cures for childhood cancer.
Over the last 22 years I have had the privilege of visiting child cancer victims in the hospital. My fellow officers and I would dress up as super heroes and spend the day with these very ill children hoping to bring a smile to their face. Since I’ve been a motor officer I have helped organize motorcycle charity rides to raise money for portable gaming stations for the hospital-bound kids to play with.
I discovered the St. Baldrick's Foundation last year when SWAT and the Motors Unit organized a visit to Cook Children's in Dallas and a beautiful 15 year old girl, battling cancer and bald from chemo, asked if I was shaving my head in support of St. Baldricks. I knew nothing about the organization and I didn't have an answer. She said “Why wouldn’t you???” and the look in her eyes spoke volumes to me. I have an opportunity to help her win her battle.
Most recently the 14 year old daughter of my long-time friends, The Gervais, was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a rare bone cancer that will take many months of radiation to recover from. Briauna is an honor roll student and talented dancer, all of which have been put on hold while she endures treatment. I am dedicating my participation in this year's event to Bri in hopes that a cure can be found so other young girls and boys won't have to put their lives on hold to fight this tragic disease.
St. Baldrick’s is dedicated solely to Childhood Cancer Research. Every year, “shavees” commit to raising money to donate to the foundation and shave their head in support of the cause. Less than 4% of the National Cancer Insititute’s budget is dedicated to childhood cancer research, which is why this organization is so important.
This year the St.Baldricks Foundation is hosting the event at Trinity Hall Irish Pub and Restaurant at Mockingbird station in Dallas. I hope to be in the shavee chair around 1 pm. This is a family friendly event, please show up and support us.
Last year, with the help of friends and family, we raised over $1500 dollars and this year our goal is $2000.
All I’m asking for is the change in your pocket. Every little bit helps. Please go to the Stbaldricks.org and give a little.
I hope to see you there and thanks for your help.
