I'm old enough to understand what cancer is, the fear it inspires, and the destruction it leaves. What I cannot begin to understand is the every second of every day impact of pediatric cancer. This horrible disease affects not just person afflicted, but the entire family. Medicine alerts, chemo cycles, nutritional needs, infection fears, middle of the night trips to the ER, weeks or months where families are separated due to hospital stays- I cannot even comprehend. But, for families touched by childhood cancer, this is their reality. My brother's friend, Rachel's, sister, Mia, is 5-years-old and probably doesn't remember life before cancer.
