As parents, we are constantly looking for ways to teach our children continuously through their lives. Our goals for 2015 was to teach the boys how fortunate they are in the life they live. We tell them often, but those are only words. We realized it was time to show them in various ways by giving back to the community.
Many of you know that I am a nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Albany Medial Center. In all my time at AMC, I have always protected the boys from my profession. Over the years, they would say mom you look sad, what's wrong, wanna talk about it? I would say no that's ok, a hug will do, and we went on with our days.
In 2006, my path crossed the Stowell Family. Their son Ben had just been newly diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of 6. They were always such an upbeat, friendly family that you just wanted to be around. Unfortunately Ben's journey ended in 2009, he was just 9 years old. When I approached the boys about St. Baldrick's, they were so excited to participate. I reached out to The Stowell Family asking if our boys could join Ben's team Green Drakkoman.
Without a doubt, the boys will remember this experience to last a lifetime. Thanks so much in advance for your support.
