I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research
Becoming a participant of the St. Baldrick's event is something that I have contemplated for quite a while. I didn't get really serious until a year ago when I shared the thought of going to my current natural hair color (grey) with a hairdresser. Her comment: "You would have to shave your head." That moment solidified my decision. There have not been childhood cancers in my family - we have been fortunate. One aunt was a 5-time cancer survivor and another died due to liver cancer. Since pledging to shave my hair many people have approached me telling of their experiences with cancers in their family. It is a devastating disease leaving us all feeling helpless and frustrated especially when it effects the smallest among us - children. I think we are close to a cure and I feel that participating is my way of someday being able to say that I helped. I am excited and nervous at the same time. Once I made the announcement I knew there was no turning back. To help create some excitement among the children in the school where I teach I offered to have it done in school, two days before the main event at Kitty Hoynes, IF we make my goal of $500. With the donations made so far on line and in cash and checks given to me at school, we are already there! Now I am seeing how much more we can come up with. Many thanks to all of my friends who are supporting me in this. May God Bless.
