I hope to raise money for this St. Baldricks event. Fundraisers like this help raise money for research so children can have a higher chance of surviving cancer. Without research, dedicated doctors and nurses, I know my son, Brandan would not be here today. He had bone cancer with less than 15% chance of surviving at the age of 17. Brandan is 26 years old now, in remission for over 8 years (diagnose over 9 years ago). He walks with a limp and about 45% used of his left arm but did not have amputation due to new improve limb-sparing surgery which removed the diseased bone and replaced it with either metal prothesis or cadaver bone. While fighting cancer he went on to graduate from high school. Brandan also graduated from college, has a girlfriend, a dog which is his best friend, an apartment, a job, and is loving the warm southern weather. He would not have been able to accomplish all this if it were not for the advances in research and the medical field in addition to all the money raised from events like St. Baldricks. While Brandan was going through his treatment there were 4 other children with some form of bone cancer, sadly 2 passed away. It is so sad to see these children try so hard to live. No child should have to suffer from cancer and no parent should have to stand by and watch their child in pain.
So I join this event as a volunteer in support for the children we meet along the way on this unplanned journey, for the children struggling now in their fight for survival, and for my son.
