I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

In a second, four words can instantly change a family forever. “Your child has cancer”, they are the scariest words that any parent can hear, but sadly every year approximately 12,500 children are diagnosed with cancer. That doesn’t include the children already battling the disease, or the ones that relapse. My name is Daisha Foster and I want to help raise money to defeat the number one killer of children in the United States. I am twenty-one years old and I was born and raised in Pea Ridge, Arkansas on our family farm. I am currently a junior at Missouri Southern State University, where I am studying Criminal Justice Administration. In my fight for criminal justice I have decided to put my foot down to stop the deadliest disease to children in America. I want to help cure children’s cancer. Every year I participate in all types of events to help people such as: Juvenile Diabetes walks, Extreme Makeover in Joplin, Habitat for Humanity, Zumbathons, to just helping fellow students at my college as a course assistant and a tutor. This year, however, I want to dream big! Every year I have attended an event on campus called St. Baldrick’s day, where students, staff, and town’s people come and shave their heads to help raise money for children’s cancer. However, most of the time it is just gentlemen that shave their heads or women with shorter hair, but I want to change that. This year I am shaving off my long curls to help raise money and donating it to Locks of Love. Most of my family and friends say I should just cut my hair and not shave it all off, but I also want to show little girls that have cancer and lose their hair that hair is not what makes them beautiful. I want to show them that bald can be beautiful too. I was just going to put jars around Joplin and my home town to raise money, but then I found out a high school senior in my home town was just diagnosed with bone cancer, and I want my town to help him. That won’t stop me from helping other kids though, so on March 12th, 2013 I will be shaving my head and showing the world Bald is Beautiful!
